Cigarette smoking has been called the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. The drug in tobacco that causes dependency is nicotine. Nicotine is a colorless and odorless drug in tobacco that stimulates the nervous system. Nicotine also produces tolerance, as more and more nicotine is needed to produce the desired effect.
